Teacher Spotlight - Mikela Schwinn
Aloha!

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Mikela Schwinn. I am originally from Honolulu, Hawaii and moved to Colorado 10 years ago to go to college at CU Boulder. I started out at RMAE as an aide and was given the amazing opportunity to teach Kindergarten 5 years ago. Kindergarten is the beginning of each student's learning journey and I absolutely love sharing that first experience with them! My goal as a teacher is to build positive relationships with my students and their families, as well as foster a love for learning!

My husband and I got engaged right before COVID hit and eloped, but after 3 years of waiting, we will FINALLY be having our big wedding this coming June! When I am not teaching, my husband and I love to travel and cook. We spend a lot of our time in Hawaii and Lake Powell. We also love to camp with our dog Moki, bike, hydrofoil, snowboard and do wind sports!

Family Summary of the September Board Meeting
Last Thursday's board meeting was filled with educational excellence updates. We reviewed the end-of-year test scores and were impressed with how the RMAE students surpassed both state and district scores. While we are pleased with the educational growth, there is always an opportunity to improve, and the SAC committee will be taking on the task of developing a plan forward.

From a cultural aspect, it was great to hear about the successes of the long-standing RMAE 100 Elk Middle School student outing, as well as, the new well-organized fun-filled Ninja Course Welcome Back event.

The board welcomed a new Community Representative, Dan O’Neill.  Dan is a former RMAE parent and past President of the RMAE board.  Now that his kids are older, he’s graciously volunteered his service as a community member, and the board looks forward to his valuable input and perspective.

The board also welcomed a new parent member to fill the vacant board seat, Gerry Kostuk. He brings many great qualities to the board including fundraising experience. Gerry will be heading up our Annual Giving fundraising campaign that happens in October. Stay tuned for more communication on this year's Annual Giving goal that helps RMAE raise money to offset the reduced public funding gap we receive as a charter school.

Please note the next regular board meeting will be on Tuesday, October 11th.
