Board Meeting Update

Family Summary of Board Working Session and Regular Meeting 2/20/20

The evening of February 20, the Board of Directors held a Working Session followed by a Regular Meeting.  The first topic of discussion was the refinancing of our school’s remaining debt from our initial build.  Our first opportunity to do this is coming up, creating an opportune time to finance our potential new building.  We identified several scenarios for our financial consultant to help us shop for, and will determine our ability to take on the new building based on the results.  That said, a new building will not be possible on financing alone; we will be depending on our awesome community to help with fundraising should this become a reality!

And speaking of the new building…Board members are looking forward to participating in Collaborative Design Process meeting this Saturday, February 29 in the cafeteria.  We have reached out to committee members with personal invitations and hope to gather lots of perspectives from families and staff.  If you haven’t heard from us, but have opinions or expertise to share, please get in touch with either Dr. Hudson or [email protected] to RSVP to join us.

In more financial news, the Board agreed on a range of annual budget to be reserved for salaries and benefits for teachers and staff.  Next school year, this will include new benefits such as 100% of premiums for short-term disability insurance, and 100% of premiums for the least expensive option for medical insurance.  It will also include paid leadership and coaching team opportunities for existing teachers.

The Regular Meeting convened on time.  The Student Council report was inspiring!  The team has some great ideas for theme weeks and days and is planning a middle school dance and fifth grade activities.  The Principal’s Report also included great updates regarding progress of the reading curriculum review, expected enrollment for next year, and the purchase of a formal Spanish curriculum.  Finally, in response to teacher feedback and provision of short-term disability insurance, we voted to eliminate the earlier proposed sick bank that would have started next year.  Based on the same feedback, we unanimously voted to amend and clarify changes to the leave policies that begin next year.

Does this sound like the kind of work and decision-making you want to contribute to our school?  Please start thinking about upcoming opportunities to join the Board of Directors.  Details will be communicated this Spring, or ask any of us to discuss.
