If you've been in the pickup line or parking lot recently, you may have noticed some signs posted around. These signs are part of ESPM's new initiative: to reduce the amount of idling that happens in our parking lot and pick up circle. We know that waiting in the pick-up line can be time consuming, which is why many parents choose to arrive early to wait for their students. However, we have noticed that the cars who are waiting end up idling for sometimes up to an hour and a half before the end of the school day. Leaving your car running is bad for the air quality and the environment at our school. We are asking that if you are going to be waiting for longer than five minutes, that you turn off your engine. There are young lungs at work that need clean air! Here are some facts that you may not have known about idling your car:

  • Pollutants have been linked to serious illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease, chronic bronchitis, and cancer.
  • For every ten minute your engine is off, you'll prevent one pound of carbon dioxide from being released.
  • You'll save fuel and money! An idling car uses between 1/5 to 7/10 of a gallon of fuel an hour
  • It is better for your engine to not have it idling for long periods of time.
  • And, most importantly, it is an easy and simple change you can make: Simply turn the key when you're stopped for more than five minutes.

Please be aware that you may be asked to turn off your engine by one of ESPM's members if you are seen idling for more than five minutes in the circle or in the parking lot.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
