Mr. Whitson makes learning new vocabulary fun and interactive! Students used a word map to help predict the definitions of key vocabulary words by looking at pictures and sentences.  Then, they match the definitions to the correct words on a graphic organizer.  Once the graphic organizer has been completed and students have a foundation of the vocabulary words, we play “Vocabulary Toss” to reinforce the definitions.  When a student matches the definition correctly to a vocabulary word they get a point.

2nd grade students started their unit on simple machines by creating catapults out of legos in Makerspace!

Family Summary of December Board Meeting

The Board voted to engage in the first step toward a multi-purpose building on the RMAE campus!  As noted in October, Neenan Archistructure offers a unique process for feasibility and design work that will support financing requirements and could support a BEST grant application, both potential means of getting our school its true multi-use space!  A big shout-out goes to the Facilities Committee; their advance work on a Facilities Master Plan resulted in a $7,000 savings on this design contract.  Please thank those Committee members when you see them:  Todd Wellman, Chad Holajter, Wendy Tullar, Scott Jones, and Jim Good.  Part of the process will include community involvement and opportunities for input, and we look forward to everyone participating.

The Board also used some of its working session to address teacher questions and concerns regarding updated paid time off policies and future safety nets.  We agreed to identify a teacher-led working committee to propose, for example, how to operate and utilize a sick leave bank.

The Student Council report was delivered by Kaylee Kipp, Mollie Beach, and Lochlan DuRonco.  The Soles4Souls shoe drive will continue through the first day of winter break, and it looks like we will meet our goal.  Candy Grams are underway, raising money for the Middle School Dance, planned for January 10.  The Student Council is also purchasing a new second string for flying the Colorado flag on the RMAE flagpole.  Way to go, team!

Congratulations to the PTO for raising $5500 through the Warren Miller movie event.  Together with the PTO, the Board would like to remind all families to please log your volunteer hours.  That includes attending events.  Taking a minute to document your participation helps make us eligible for grants and serves as an indicator of our success as a school.

Finally, those who follow education in the news may know that the Colorado School Board plans to propose legislation that would seriously undercut existing charter schools like RMAE.  We encourage all families to stay informed about pressing legislative issues impacting Colorado charter public schools, help counter public charter school myths and misinformation, and advocate to protect Colorado’s current charter school law, which is one of the strongest in the nation.  The Colorado League of Charter Schools has established the Colorado Charter Advocacy Network (COCAN).  Text COCAN to 52886 to stay informed, and look for RMAE to host an information session with outside experts on this topic in the new year.

The next Board of Directors meeting will be held on Thursday, January 9.  Due to the potential to advance the multi-purpose building plan, receive proposals from financing suppliers, and hear about impacts of the possible legislation, we encourage maximum participation.  Therefore, childcare will be provided onsite.  Please join us to participate in these important developments for RMAE.  Questions?  Email [email protected].
