News from the Principal

Hello RMAE families,

We are very appreciative of your support and involvement in RMAE.  By now you have received information on our “Keep RMAE Special” giving campaign.  We all know how special the educational experience is at our school, which is why your gift is so important.  Our goal is 100% Board, staff, and family participation as a way to reach the overall financial goal.  Once we reach that goal, every student and staff member will get to duct tape me to the wall!  We will be sending you electronic updates on our progress and you can check out the thermometer in the circle.  Thank you for making a difference!

I am also proud to announce the winner of our family Directory cover contest.  We had 31 drawings submitted with all of them a genuine masterpiece!  All of our students voted on the artwork through their art class and the winner is Layla Hiltabiddle in 5th grade!  A special thanks to Ms. Saari who hosted after hours art studio time for the students to complete their masterpieces and to PTO for sponsoring the contest and the directory.

Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Ann Hudson

Still Searching for a Videographer - If you have any skills in this area or are interested in trying something new, we would love to talk to you.  We have an important project that we need your help with.  Call, drop-in or email the office if you are able to help.

A 'Taste of RMAE' - We will be hosting a 'Taste of RMAE' on Wednesday, Nov 29th for prospective families.  During the school day we are inviting prospective students to experience being a RMAE student for the day or any portion of the day. Your children are welcome to invite their friends to join them in their classrooms.  Parents will be offered on opportunity to observe classrooms, meet with Dr. Hudson and tour the campus.  We need your help to get the word out about this event to your friends, your children's friends and neighbors.   The easiest way for people to register is on our website where they will find a 'Taste of RMAE' quick link on our home page.

Teacher Spotlight –
Hi everyone!  My name is Jaye Scheid and I teach first grade.  This is my second year at RMAE but have taught at other private and charter schools in Denver. RMAE is special to me because of the children, passionate staff, Core Knowledge curriculum, and just overall sense of community.  My husband and I moved to Evergreen 2 summers ago after living in Denver for almost 5 years.  Previous to that I was in college in northern Minnesota and spent 2 months student teaching abroad in Slovenia.  I grew up in Eau Claire, WI.  In my free time I enjoy hiking, camping, skiing, reading, traveling to new places, and just relaxing at home.  I also love yoga, pilates, and the Packers!

Elective of the week - Meet our middle school bucket drummers! - RMAE’s bucket drumming elective meets every Wednesday to explore an art form that street performers (“buskers”) have been developing for decades. This elective gives students a chance to get creative (and groovy!) by exploring the variety of unique sounds and rhythms they can make with five-gallon buckets, as well as other everyday objects. RMAE’s bucket drummers work together as an ensemble to improvise, create, and perform complementary rhythms. Bucket drumming goes beyond reinforcing students’ sense of rhythm and percussion technique; it requires students to develop their own definition of what music truly is.

WEEKLY HEALTH TIP - By Mrs. Best/P.E. Teacher - Health Tip #11 - The Importance of SleepAdults need 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Adolescents need 10-12 hours of sleep per night. In the United States it’s estimated that 30% of adults and 66% of adolescents are regularly sleep deprived.  Sleep is very important because our DNA is repaired and our bodies replenish for the day ahead. When we lose sleep; memory, learning, mood, and reaction time are affected. Sleeplessness can cause inflammation, hallucinations, high blood pressure, and it’s even been linked to diabetes and obesity. This is due to a buildup of byproducts that accumulate between cells. These byproducts are the toxic waste produced throughout the day from the chemical reactions that take place to provide the necessary energy to function.  During sleep the glymphatic system uses cerebrospinal fluid to flush away toxic byproducts. There are also lymphatic vessels throughout the brain, which carry immune cells to help clear out the brain’s daily waste products when we sleep. If we want to maintain our health and our sanity, then sleep is a necessary restorative process that our bodies need every night.

Tips that will help your body prepare for sleep:

  • Don’t eat 2 hours before bedtime
  • Don’t drink caffeine past 3pm
  • No technology 1 hour before bedtime
  • Read before bedtime
  • Take a warm bath 1 hour before bedtime
  • Listen to meditation music right before bedtime
  • Don’t eat sugary foods after 6pm
  • Before falling asleep lay on your back with your hands on your stomach, focus on your breathing
  • Focus your thoughts on gratitude before bedtime
