News from the Principal

Hello RMAE Families,

There is a growing body of research indicating kids are more successful in school when parents are involved.   We are fortunate to have families that support their child(ren) and work together with our staff.  If you haven’t done so already, please sign up for a conference time with your teacher.  The signups have been sent by the teachers and are in this newsletter.

I am thrilled to announce that our alum, Max Goldenberg, has completed the last step of his Eagle Scout project by building and installing a flag retirement box in our front foyer.  This depository is a place to bring in flags that need to be retired.  His scout troop will be here periodically to empty and properly retire the donated flags.

It is that time to start planning for next year.  In order to ensure an equal enrollment opportunity for all students as well as plan appropriate staffing and resources, please submit your re-enrollment intent by February  23, 2018.  Our re-enrollment intent is electronic and will take only a few minutes of your time.  2018-2019 Re-enrollment Intent Link.  Thank you for the privilege of partnering with you in the education of your child.  We look forward to another excellent year together!

Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Ann Hudson

Teacher Spotlight - Hello RMAE!  My name is Shawnna Jermano and I’m the speech therapist.  This is my 10th year at RMAE and I have loved every minute.  I feel so blessed to be part of this amazing community. Your children make me smile every day with their funny comments and stories about their families---yes, they share everything! When I’m not at school, you can find me outside with my family or at a high school sporting event.  I have 4 teenagers at the moment which is challenging and crazy fun at the same time.  My oldest is attending college in Iowa and my youngest is an 8th grader here at RMAE.  I also enjoy reading, traveling and coffee:)  By the way, I am currently teaching my freshman how to drive so if you see a white Highlander on the road, move out of the way!

Elective of the week - Photography - In this quarter's photography elective, students are given a challenge each week that is helping them learn different photographic techniques and styles. They have had challenges in micro v. macro, black and white, and lighting photography. In the coming weeks, students will also be customizing frames that were generously donated so they can have a keepsake!

WEEKLY HEALTH TIP - By Mrs. Best/P.E. Teacher - Health Tip #20 - The month of February is heart awareness month at RMAE. Students K-5th grade are learning five ways to make their hearts healthy:

  1. Be physically active for 60 minutes per day
  2. Color your plate with fruits and vegetables
  3. Avoid smoking
  4. Avoid sugary drinks, drink more water
  5. Watch out for salt, eat junk food infrequently

With over 200 varieties of ripe, juicy delicious fruits and crisp, savory veggies, there is an almost endless bounty to choose from. Eating fruits and veggies of different colors- red, dark green, yellow, blue, purple, white, and orange provides the broadest range of nutrients. Colorful fruits and veggies are dietary sources of important nutrients many people don’t get enough of, such as fiber, folate, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C, and magnesium.

1st Grade - Celebrates 100th day of 1st Grade - First grade students had a blast counting, building and demonstrating their knowledge of numbers up to 100!

2nd Grade - Asia Day is the culmination of 2nd grade's study of Ancient China, India, and modern Japan.  The activities include calligraphy,  doll making, origami, carp and fans, pongals, and best of all the food tasting.

7th Grade - This week in 7th grade, the students participated in a stock market simulation. We have been studying the Core Knowledge unit of the 1920s and will be moving into the Great Depression after this simulation. Students could buy and sell stocks that were available in the 1920s based on actual prices. Drama, joy, and heartbreak flooded the room as Black Tuesday 1929 hit.
