Second Round Choice Enrollment - If you, or someone you know, has missed the First Round Choice Enrollment Period, enrollment applications can now be submitted via the Second Round Period. The Second Round is a first come, first served enrollment process.
If you have children who are not currently attending RMAE, and you are interested in having them attend school here for the 2018-19 school year, you must submit an enrollment application. We still have openings in most grades.
Safety Reminder - It has come to our attention that several drivers are ignoring our stop sign on the lower level crosswalk. Although it is a small stop sign, it is none the less a STOP SIGN and in our school zone. It is not a 'yield to pedestrians in crosswalk' sign. Please come to a complete STOP when approaching this crosswalk. UPDATE: During inclement weather, when the roads may be icy, drivers are still expected to come to a complete stop. We will, however, close the walkway in the afternoons for the safety of students in the event that vehicles are unable to stop safely. The safety and welfare of our kids is our top priority. Thank you.
Teacher Spotlight - I started teaching for Rocky Mountain Academy when it opened in 2001. The excitement and parent involvement around the opening of a new charter school was contagious. It was truly a place where I wanted to teach and have ever since. My passion is teaching and watching children grow and learn. I also have enjoyed adding music to the classroom and teaching piano lessons after school. When I’m not working I enjoy hiking, biking, piano, and reading.
Elective of the week - Mural - By Mrs. Pumphrey - Eighth grade students have been hard at work since the beginning of this school year designing and painting a mural in the library. We first looked at examples of murals from other libraries, talked about what we liked about each mural, and brainstormed ideas for our mural. Students made sketches of their ideas. From there, we started combining ideas until we came up with an overall plan. The theme of the mural is storybook characters that are coming together from different stories in a sea and land setting. There are truffula trees, a large tree, hills, and a meandering river that flows into a sea. Some of the characters we have been working on are: Alice, the BFG, a wild thing and Max, a star bellied sneech, Ariel, and the Cheshire Cat. We have included Captain Hook's ship, a castle in a cloud, a golden snitch (soon to have Harry Potter chasing it on a broom), Barad-dûr (the tower from Mordor), and have other plans for adding characters and settings from books. The mural has slowly evolved to include other walls besides the two main walls. I couldn't be more proud of the fine, imaginative, and dedicated work my students have done so far! If you have a child in grades K-5, please check their Friday folder for information on how to register for our school team at heart.org/jump or by searching Jump/Hoops in the app store on your mobile device. Heart disease is the #1 killer of Americans. Therefore, our students are learning all about what they can do to keep their hearts healthy, take their own health challenge, and learn how they can help others by collecting donations for the American Heart Association. We are a healthy and service-minded community! Here is a recipe for a heart healthy muffin.
Raspberry Muffins with Chia Seeds
Total Time 28 minutes| Servings 12 | 1 muffin each - Calories 126 kcal
Ingredients
- 1½ cups whole wheat flour
- 1 Tbsp. chia seeds
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- ½ tsp. fine sea salt (or Himalayan salt)
- 1 cup mashed sweet potato (or pumpkin puree)
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 2 large egg whites (¼ cup)
- ½ cup pure maple syrup
- 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup fresh raspberries
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375° F.
- Prepare 12 muffin cups by lining with muffin papers or coating with spray.
- Combine flour, chia seeds, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl; mix well. Set aside.
- Combine sweet potato, applesauce, egg whites, maple syrup, and extract in a medium bowl; whisk to blend.
- Add flour mixture to egg mixture; mix until just blended.
- Gently fold in raspberries.
- Divide batter among prepared muffin cups.
- Bake 15 to 18 minutes, or until golden brown and tester inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Transfer muffins to rack; cool.

Classroom News
3rd Grade - Cow eye dissection - A cow eye is very similar to the eye of a human. By dissecting and examining the anatomy of a preserved cow eye, students learn how their own eyes form images of the world and send these images to their brains.
4th & 5th Grade - CELL-A-BRATION - As the culminating activity on our study of cells, 4th and 5th grades had a “CELL-A-BRATION.” Each student brought in an edible model of either a plant or animal cell. The students then enjoyed eating their concoctions!
6th Grade - During 6th grade math the students made their own math games. They created a game that related to one math concept that we have covered so far this school year. They had to be able to re-teach or reinforce an objective we have learned already this year. We invited 4th and 5th grades to our classroom to share in their amazing math games!
8th Grade Technology - 8th Grade students get into the nuts and bolts of programming and robotics in Tech Class with Mr. Dunbar. Every week 8th grade students add a new skill to their robotics tool box. This week, the focus was on complex actions with loops, switches, and color sensors. Each group learned how to program their robot to follow a black electrical tape line. This may seem like a simple idea but it actually requires a fair amount of complex programming. In many ways, these are similar programs to that of NASA's Curiosity Rover on Mars.
