A Message from the RMAE Board of Directors:

Great news!  We are half way through our Annual Giving Campaign and are at 42% of our goal, with a participation rate of 12%!  Thanks so much to those who have already participated in this year's annual giving!   We are hoping for a 100% participation rate from our families to help us reach our campaign goal of $100,000.  Please consider a donation amount that is comfortable for your family to help us attain our 100% participation objective. 

Grant applications, and subsequent funding, are viewed more favorably for schools with higher parent donation and volunteer participation rates.  Your participation makes a difference, and your gift makes an impact this year.   It provides funding for the innovative programs at RMAE, and enhances the educational experience for our students.

Kindergarten - Native American Culture Celebration - We have been learning about our country’s natives for the past three weeks.  We have built dream catchers and native structures among some of our learning.  This celebration brought it all together and included a visit from authentic Native American artifacts for the children to explore.

3rd Grade - Viking flags - We talked about how Viking clans would design their flags to represent something that is important to them, so the kids thought of something that is important to them to then make their own Viking clan flags.

4th Grade - Pumpkin Math - Students investigated to see if the height, weight, circumference, and  number of ridges affected the amount of seeds in a pumpkin. They first estimated, then measured, weighed, and counted.  Next, they grouped seeds into piles of seven to work on their double digit multiplication skills.  Finally, they compared the class data to formulate their conclusions.  The results were really surprising and our mathematicians enjoyed this fun fourth grade tradition! 

6th Grade - NREL Field Trip - Students engaged in several hands on activities while learning about renewable and non renewable energy!

7th Grade - This week and last, 7th grade was diving into the Core Knowledge Unit of World War I.  Students conducted research about the trenches, created scale drawings of the trenches and the necessary supplies and materials, and then dug their scaled models into planter boxes. It was a great project that lead them through the design process!

8th Grade Science - What’s that smell in Building 3?

There have been reports of a strange odor (stranger than usual) in Building 3.  While the odor may remind one of a greasy spoon restaurant that should have been closed by the local Health Department, it was actually the result of an 8th grade Science Lab on the Calorimetry of Food.

Did you ever wonder how the caloric content of food is determined?  To investigate this question, each student provided samples of some of their favorite snack foods for Energy Content Determination.  The students constructed calorimeters from aluminum cans and additional materials provided for them.  They placed a known mass of water at a known temperature in their aluminum-can-calorimeters, ignited their respective food items, and monitored the resulting temperature increase in the water.  Upon carefully determining the change in mass of the food and the change in water temperature, the students used the First Law of Themodynamics and the specific heat of water to calculate the heat energy released by the combustion of their snack food items.  In case you are interested, Doritos produced some spectacularly flammable results … all in the name of Science!  Joseph Black would have been proud.

GET YOUR TICKETS!!  November 15th-16th, 6:30 pm @ The Center Stage - RATs the Musical, is a new look at the familiar story with memorable music and witty lyrics.  RMAE's 3rd - 5th graders are involved as cast and crew.  Tickets available at:  Mountain Youth Musicals Tickets 

7th grade Sea Camp - Deposits are due by Friday, November 16th.  

E-Recycling - December 3rd-4th - RMAE will be recycling its old and unusable technology with Rocky Mountain E-Waste.  Good news!  You too can recycle with RMAE!  Rocky Mountain E-Waste accepts nearly all old technology (computers, laptops, phones, cords, cables, calculators, flat screen TVs, and monitors).  However, the one item that Rocky Mountain E-Waste absolutely cannot accept is large, tube style TVs.   For a donation of $10 for the first item and $5 for every item after that, you may recycle any of the previously mentioned items at RMAE. Cords and chargers can be recycled free of charge.  Any tech to be recycled must be brought in on December 3rd and 4th between 3:10 and 4:00pm. Due to space constraints we will not be able to take anything prior to the afternoon of the 3rd or after 4pm on the 4th. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Dunbar at [email protected]

Original Works - Extended Deadline Monday, November 12 - The Original Works Online Store has re-opened for orders and will remain open until next Monday, November 12th.  If you have not yet had the opportunity to place your order, now is a great time to do so.  Look in your inbox for an email for instructions.

Book Fair - November 26-29 - RMAE's annual book fair will be held in the Middle School Commons.  Local authors will join in the fun with readings, book signings and activities.  RMAE will receive 25% of profit from all items purchased at the fair and we will be supporting a great local business!  Sign up to Volunteer - A to Z Connect > Event Sign Up > then search for " Book Fair 2018 Volunteers"

Cookies with Santa - Sunday, December 9, 1-3 pm - Save the date! The beloved Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at RMAE to have pictures taken by Annie Coppock.  Watch your email for details. 

Movies with Teachers - Thursday, December 13 - Mark your calendars for our second movie night of the year. Proceeds from our movie nights go to classroom technology upgrades.

Audition Workshop - Is your middle school child interested in increasing his or her confidence in musical auditioning?  Mountain Youth Musicals is offering a two day audition workshop on November 8th and November 29th, 3:15 - 5:00 at RMAE.  There are 10 spots left.  Please email Gretchen Moritz at [email protected] if you have questions.  You may reserve your spot by signing up Mountain Youth Musicals - Workshops

VACANT SEAT on the RMAE BOARD of DIRECTORS - The Board wishes to appoint an interested candidate to the vacant seat to serve for 1.5 years (the remainder of a 3-year term). If interested, please submit your letter of interest and short resumé to the Board at [email protected] as soon as possible, but no later than December 19, 2018. Candidates will be interviewed and one will be appointed to the Board at the next meeting on January 10, 2019. Please feel free to contact Board members if you have any questions.

Wrestling Camp @ Colorado School of Mines - December 27-28, 9 AM-12 PM - Our camps give parents a great option to send their child to a sports camp in a closely supervised environment during times they might be working and in need of daycare/child supervision over winter break.  Ages 5-18 (open to beginners & experienced wrestlers) - $60 with pre-registration - $75 for walk-in.  Mines Westling Registration/Information Link
