News from the Principal

Hello RMAE families,

Our book fair was launched this week with a special guest, Theresa Howell, author of Maybe Something Beautiful.  She read her story and shared photos of the mural on which her story was based with our kindergarten through third grade classes.  The students thoroughly enjoyed her interactive discussion and book.  Many thanks to Carrie Wassemiller for setting up this experience for our students!  There is much research indicating the positive impact reading has on a child.  Please continue to read with your children, ask about the book they are reading, and share about the book you just can’t put down. While our book fair has concluded on our campus, it will continue through next Thursday at the HearthFire book store.  Stop by with your child's wish list.  There are also many great gift ideas and a portion of the proceeds comes back to our PTO.

As you set your calendar to visit our book fair, also mark the dates of our parent-teacher conferences next week.  To value everyone’s time, your teachers have sent sign-up links and they are included in this newsletter.  If you haven’t done so already, claim your time! This is an opportunity to have one on one discussions with your child’s teacher, learn about their progress, next steps, and how we all can continue to work as a team to support their learning experience.

Proud Principal,
Dr. Ann Hudson

4th & 5th Grade STEM Field Trip - The fourth and fifth grade class traveled to Colorado Springs to attend the Audience with an Astronaut program sponsored by the Space Foundation at the Air Force on Thursday.  The students were treated to hands on experiments in chemistry, robotics and physics.  They actually participated in programming a robot which broke out into some pretty cool dance moves.    And to top it off, they had some one on one time with Duane "Digger" Carey a former NASA Astronaut.  Digger's flight experience includes a March,2002 Space shuttle trip on the STS-109 Columbia.  A huge shout out to Ms. Gordon for scheduling and to Ms. Bartlett for helping organize the details.

Specials Class Spotlight - Middle School Music - by Gretchen Moritz

“Music ….. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination…”-Plato
Music is Science
Music is Mathematics
Music is History
Music is Physical Education
But most of all Music is an art form that allows kids to think creatively, listen intently, work as a team, develop discipline, and explore the world around them in a way like no other.

Every Middle School child attends a general music class twice a week.  Our framework for that class is the grade specific core curriculum. I work to present that information to kids with interactive lessons and experiences.   We listen to music from the great composers of the past and connect what we know and hear with historical events, or trends in music that followed, or societal impact of that music.  We also spend a good deal of class time learning musical elements in the truest sense of experiential learning.   Practicing a piece and creating music on any instrument is powerful instantaneous feedback.

Right now, kids are working on pieces of music to present to parents at the Night of the Arts in December.  This is the fourth annual Night of the Arts event whereby the Middle School art and music department team up with PTO to celebrate music, art, kids, and RMAE.  You will have the opportunity to not only watch an amazing display of fun music created by our Middle School kids but also contribute money to our wonderful school through bidding on the kid art.  This year, our theme is Hawaii.  Stay tuned for more details to follow.

Outside of the school day, music opportunities abound.  Our school offers choir, orchestra, and musical theater.  Grade school and Middle School is a fabulous time for kids to venture out and explore the arts beyond what we can do in general music class.   Our choir has been invited to perform at the Mountain Area chorale festival on November 8th.  Please contact me [email protected] if your child is interested in either Jr. Choir or Middle School choir.  They still have time to join.   Please also mark November 16th down on your calendar to come watch our 3rd - 5th grade musical theater company perform “We Haz Jazz” at Center Stage.  Lastly, mark December 1st down on your calendars for Middle School musical tryouts.  I’m excited to announce our spring musical: the new Broadway “Cinderella”.   Check out our fun picture loaded website for more information www.rmymusicals.com.

Teacher Spotlight Tracee Vickery - This is my twenty fourth year teaching. I received my teaching license and undergraduate degree from the University of Redlands and my master’s degree from California State University at San Bernardino in Environmental Education. My first three years teaching were in California, and then we moved to beautiful Colorado! I have taught second through sixth grade in the classroom, and additionally have taught outdoor education to preschool through adults. I also spent a semester as the Curriculum Specialist at Mount Evan’s Outdoor Laboratory School here in Evergreen.

My family and I fell in love with Evergreen and decided to move here in 2011. Last year, I was fortunate to find RMAE and I’m so happy to be teaching and living in our amazing mountain community. I enjoy the outdoors and spend my free time with family and friends biking, running, swimming, hiking, and camping.  This summer my husband and I will be celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary. Jon is an Environmental Health Specialist for Jefferson County Health Department. We have three children: Destiny (Junior at EHS), DaShaun ( Freshman), and Anthony ( 7th Grade at EMS.)
