Dear Parents,
Thank you SO much to Elizabeth Ruggles and the crew of mothers who made our end of year party terrific!
Next week, we will continue learning about Greek gods & goddesses, finish our 2nd grade sayings, and practice multiplication facts.
PLEASE SEND A BAG TO SCHOOL WITH YOUR CHILD.  We will send home supplies on Wednesday.
PLEASE SEND FRIDAY FOLDERS TO SCHOOL ON MONDAY.  We will send report cards, test scores, and a few extras home with your child on Thursday.
SCHOOL IS OUT AT 12:00 ON THURSDAY.
There will be an assembly at 10:45 on Thursday.
What a great year with terrific kids!  It's hard to believe it's almost over!

Dear Parents,
We are looking forward to performing our program for you on Tuesday evening at 6:00 in the cafeteria!

In your child's Friday Folder is a letter explaining what your child needs to wear on Monday for our dress rehearsal and on Tuesday evening. We have also attached the letter to this email.

Field Day is this Friday, May 11th.  Second grade should wear a red shirt and be sure to have a hat, water bottle, and sunscreen.  Shorts are fine.
Mrs. Hushen will be out on Thursday and Friday this week.  Our wonderful aide, Candy Tabor, will be in charge.  If you have a message on those days, please send to [email protected].

Dear Parents,
The students made amazing simple machine inventions!  They loved showing them to all the grades.  Our room had cotton balls flying, grapes being smashed, cars going down ramps and so many other wonderful projects.  The best part of all was hearing the students describe their inventions and the simple machines in it.
Our story next week is "Cowboys"  (Reading Street 6.4 on Spelling City)
Other than an occasional fact practice, there will be no more homework this year.

Dear Parents,

Community Service Day is such a great day for the students.  We worked to pick up trash in Elk Meadow under the guidance of Open Space volunteers.  Thank you so much Amy Jodie for all your hard work to arrange this day for the kids.

Your child's homework this week will be to work on their Simple Machines project.  Please remember to read and practice math facts regularly as well.

Our story is "Red, White, and Blue"  6.2 in Spelling City.

Please check at home for any library books that have not been returned.

We have enjoyed seeing our 9 chicks hatch.  It's amazing how quickly they change from ugly to super cute!

Dear Parents,
Wow!  The students did an amazing job on their Young Writers' books!  Thank you for encouraging and helping them.  We loved listening to the stories!
This coming week there will not be a story or a spelling list as Thursday is Community Service Day and there is no school on Friday.
We are working on geometry in math and continuing learning about simple machines.
We should have chicks by Wednesday, hopefully.  If anyone is interesting in adopting the chicks, please let us know.

Today the students took a geometry challenge to see if they could work together and build a structure that did not collapse!

Dear Parents,

We are busy!  The Carnival is coming on Friday!
Candling the chicken eggs was a wonderful experience for the students!  We are continuing to read Charlotte's Web and watched the first half of the movie this week and will finish it next week.  We have some culminating activities about friends as we finish this delightful book.  We are beginning our science unit on simple machines.
Our story this week is "The Signmaker's Apprentice"  (5.5 on Spellingcity)
The students are enjoying our geometry unit in math and will start fractions soon.

Dear Parents,
It's that time of year when the calendar fills up quickly!
We have chicken eggs!  21 days until they hatch. 
The students have been enjoying reading and discussing Charlotte's Web this week.  We will continue reading the story next week as well.
We are studying about geometry,both two and three dimensional this week.  We will also read the story, "Horace and Morris, but Mostly Dolores" (5.4 in Spelling City).

Dear Parents,
Your child is bringing home the story we have been working on in class in a rough draft format.  Included in the packet is the final book with ideas and instructions to help your child make the best book possible.  Whether or not you plan to attend the Young Writers' Conference, the book is due in class on Wednesday, April 18th.
Every student has a part in the Patriotic program and needs to work on memorizing their lines.

Dear Parents,
We loved hearing about the different countries from which the students' parents/relatives came to America.  Thank you for helping your child research their Family Tile.

Our story this coming week is "Bad Dog, Dodger".  (5.3 on Spelling City)
We will concentrate on writing this upcoming short week and will complete our unit on measuring using the metric system.
Please check your child's Friday Folder for his/her report card.

Dear Parents,
We have finished our study of the Civil War and Underground Railroad.  We took our test today.  Next week, we will begin our Immigration unit.  Expect to see a "Family Tile" come home early next week to be filled out about where and when your ancestors immigrated to America.
Our story next week is, "One Dark Night"  (5.2 on Spelling City)
We are also learning about the art of writing a book.  Please talk with your child about a good idea for a book.  We will begin a storyboard this week.
Also, expect to see a homework assignment on Monday in the form of a booklet called "Pet Project" about measuring your pets.  It is due on Thursday.  We are measuring everything imaginable during math!  The extra page on your child's math homework is not optional this coming week as all students need extra practice subtracting 3 and 4 digit 
numbers.
Date for your calendar:  Tuesday, May 15, Patriotic Program at 6:00 pm in the cafeteria.
Next week, your child will bring home lines to memorize.

Dear Parents,
We are enjoying our study of the Civil War, the generals, the division in our country, and Abraham Lincoln.  This week, we will continue learning about the war and also the Underground Railroad.

Our story this week is "Firefighters"  (5.1 in Spelling City)

We will begin discussing what makes a good story in preparation for Young Writers.  (Each child in second grade will make and share a book they have created.)  The Young Writers' flyer is attached to this email.

There is an extra attachment of homework that is optional, but we strongly suggest your child complete the 3-digit addition and subtraction pages Monday-Wednesday next week.
February 23, 2018
Dear Parents,
The students had a great time at the Arvada Center on Tuesday.  They saw the play, "Seussical"  and during their Arts Day activity, had an actor help them put on their own play of The Three Little Pigs, with a part for everyone and lots of laughs for all.
Please be sure your child has appropriate winter wear each day.
We will be reading the story, "Helen Keller" next week.  (4.5 on Spellingcity.)  We will continue our study of the Civil War, read chapter books on the Civil War, work on adverbs, quotation marks, and WRITE!  Our math focuses on time this week.  Please have your child count money and practice telling time at home.
Our Core Virtue the month of February is Loyalty and March begins Compassion.  Each day, we begin the day with a writing prompt and a discussion.  Our prompt centers around elements of the week's story and our core virtues.

February 15, 2018
Dear Parents,
It has been wonderful to discuss your child's growth during our recent conferences.
We have sent home a Scholastic book order in your child's Friday Folder.  Please look it over and order online by next Friday, February 23rd.
Don't forget our field trip this coming Tuesday, February 20th!  The students need to wear a red shirt and bring a sack lunch.  It should be a great trip.
We will begin our Civil War unit this week with chapter books to read and many activities.  We have also begun to study money and time in math.  Please help your child practice counting money at home.

February 9, 2018

Dear Parents,  
Thank you for making Asia Day a wonderful success for the students.  The children really enjoyed the festivities and we couldn't have done it without all of you who volunteered!
  
Next week, we will cover two units in science:  Digestive Unit and Water Cycle.
The spelling list words for next week will comprise the vocabulary from these units.  Check spelling city for extra practice.
The children may bring their valentines next week on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.  The party will take place from 10:30-11:30 on Wednesday.

Please look over the times you have scheduled a conference and we will see you on Wed. and Thursday.  Thursday dismissal is 12:00 and no school on Friday.

Asia Day is approaching quickly.  We still need some supplies and volunteers.  Please check on the link below  to see how you may be able to help.  We particularly need food items.
Congratulations to our second grade spelling bee contestants!  They were awesome!  Sophia Corrin ended up as one of the runners up and Ty lasted 7 rounds!

Second Grade Volunteers
The story for next week is Frogs  4.3.  We will finish the study of India and test the students on Friday.  We will also include the discussion, stories, and videos of Civil Rights:  Susan B. Anthony, Jackie Robinson, etc. 
We had a great time today exploring the many animals and designs we could make using tangrams, after reading the book, Grandfather Tang's Story.

Dear Parents,
The students learned how to write a Haiku today.  (5/7/5 syllables, 3 lines.)  Ask your child to share his or her Haiku with you.

Our story this next week is "Life Cycle of a Pumpkin"  4.2
We will learn about India this coming week.  We will compare religions, learn about the geography of India, hear some of the wonderful stories such as "The Blind Men and the Elephant" and watch videos that include "The Tiger and the Brahman" and "Families in India".

We will continue our study of 3-digit addition and subtraction.
Please remember that we will go outside most days and that your child needs to be dressed for the weather.  (Nametags, please on everything!)

Dear Parents,  
Next week, we will be finishing our study of China and begin the study of Japan.  We will learn about the geography and customs of Japan.  The students will complete a map of Japan,  compose a Haiku poem, and read a chapter book about Sadako.  We will also give students the opportunity to view videos about Families of Japan and the story of The Moon Princess.  We will not have a story this upcoming week; instead we will be reading chapter books about silkworms and customs of China.  You will receive spelling words on Monday.

Dear Parents,
Report cards are in your child's homework folder as well as a field trip form to the Arvada Center.

We have immersed ourselves in China this week!  Chinese New Year, Lai-Sees, geography, dragons, and Chinese culture to name some of our learning.  
We will continue the study of China this coming week.  To enhance our study, we will make zodiacs, hats, lanterns, learn about Confucius, inventions and calligraphy.  We have a few videos that help bring Chinese culture to life, including "Families of China" and "Big Bird Goes to China."
Our story is "The Quilt Story" 4.1
Many of the students have lost or used up their supplies.  Please check with your child to see if he or she needs colored pencils, crayons or markers and please replenish them.

Dear Parents,
We hope you have had a wonderful holiday!
We are looking forward to teaching your children this new year.  We will begin our Asia unit this week with a study of China,  (The students even had Lai-Sees, a good luck envelope on their desks  Monday morning.). We will learn about the geography of China, the people, Confucius, and some of the history.  We will enhance the lessons with projects, activities, and some wonderful videos depicting the scenery, the people, and stories of China.
We will continue our math work on double-digit subtraction and our story this week is "A Weed is a Flower", which is a great story about George Washington Carver.  We will also be working on writing and editing a two-point expository paragraph.
Lots to do!

December 15, 2017
Dear Parents,
The student's holiday tradition reports are awesome!  Thank you for all your help.  It's fun to listen to the students discuss how to do a Power Point with each other, and it's wonderful to hear about each families traditions during the holidays.
We are finishing the War of 1812 and Trail of Tears this week.  Next week we will be writing, writing, writing, mostly stories and activities that center around the holidays.  There will be no spelling test or math homework next week.
Please check your child's Friday Folder for the CogAT results.  If you have any questions, please contact us.
Our holiday party will take place on Tuesday at 10:00.
Tall Pringles cans are needed in order for your child to make a Nutcracker!

Dear Parents,
This is such a busy time of year and students are really excited about the holidays!  We will continue the routine of our stories, double-digit subtraction, and learning about the Trail of Tears next week, interspersed with holiday writing and activities.  The tradition reports are wonderful!  It is great to learn about everyone's different ways to celebrate the holidays.
Our story next week is Rosa and Blanca 3.4.
Many of the students were not prepared for the cold days we had this week.  We try to go out for almost every recess, so be sure your child has a hat and gloves (labeled) each day.
Please collect tall Pringles cans and send them to school for a project.
You're invited to our music class on Tuesday, December 12th from 9:50-10:40.
Our class party will take place on Tuesday, December 19th.

November 30, 2017
Dear Parents,
It was great to see the students after our long break.  They have been writing a two-point expository paragraph about their Thanksgiving Break and doing a nice job.  We have also started our study about the War of 1812.
We are so pleased the students are understanding double-digit addition.  Next week, we will start double-digit subtraction.
Our story next week is Dear Juno 2.3.
We have sent home in Thursday homework folders our Holiday Tradition report requirements.  The students really enjoy hearing about how each of the students celebrate the holidays.  If the date doesn't work for you, please let us know and we can switch it.

Dear Parents,
This week was busy!  We started the week getting ready for Pioneer Day, which was wonderful.  We ended the week studying about cells and making a cell cookie to show the parts of a cell.  
Our story this coming week is 2.5  A Turkey for Thanksgiving.

We will have a low key celebration next Friday, November 17th after lunch.  We call it a Friendship Snack and the details are in your child's Friday Folder.
