Principal news

Hello RMAE families,

We all have daily reminders that come in different forms.  Some are more routine and mundane while others have a significant impact.  Our reminders may be in the form of calendar alarms, the dog looking at us with big eyes triggering us to fill the food bowl, a smile sent our way that says everything is ok, a random hug from our child, etc.  In the past two weeks I have had daily reminders of how wonderful our RMAE community is, from the quite obvious to the more subtle.  Next time you think about RMAE, speak with your child about school, or are on campus, even if it is just the drop off/pick up area, take a moment and acknowledge to yourself all the positive things that make this place so positively unique. I then challenge you to share that thought with two people - another RMAE family member and one who is not.  We have quite a hidden gem at RMAE and we need to remind each other as well as share with others who don’t know us.

There are so many positive things happening at our school, it’s hard to know about it all.  So beginning with this newsletter we will be spotlighting a teacher.  This will help give you insight on who these folks are beyond their “teacher life”.  We will also highlight a program or activity to share some of our students’ learning experiences.  I look forward to sharing these with you throughout the year.

It is imperative that others in our community know about us at a personal level.  Rise to the challenge and start the conversation!

Learning Experience Highlight: Discovery Center

Nestled in the foot hills of Colorado Springs is an “Out of This World” museum, “The Discovery Center.” The Discovery Center is a space based experiential science lab/museum that incorporates the very best of space science for students.  This fall, fourth grade has the amazing opportunity to travel to Colorado Springs and go to the Air Force Academy for “Audience with an Astronaut.”  Not only will students meet with Duane Digger Carey, astronaut and Lieutenant Colonel of the Air Force, students will spend a morning of Space science rotations full of interactive experiences sponsored by The Discovery Center. We look forward to a great hands-on learning experience for our students!

Teacher Spotlight: Sharon Narans

Besides being a Proud Third Grader Teacher at RMAE, I feel I have a special place in our Evergreen Community.  My husband and I moved to Evergreen when our first child was ready for school.  We always knew we wanted to get out of the city and raise our children in a mountain community.  We bought a house on beautiful Bear Mountain and our two boys (at the time) started school.  We have always enjoyed the active lifestyle Evergreen has to offer especially in the summer and fall months.  We enjoy all the Lake Concerts, Evergreen Rodeo, Holiday Walk, and many activities downtown.  When the boys got older and their schedules demanded lots of driving we moved down from Bear Mountain to the Soda Creek area.  Here it was much easier to get around town and even ride bikes to various locations.  We enjoy the Buchanan Recreation Center, Elk Meadow, and Squaw Pass road for biking and hiking.  My three boys have all graduated from Evergreen High School.  They are all living and working in Colorado.  I keep active by going to yoga, Zumba, running, snow skiing, hiking, and riding my mountain bike.  I also am very active in the Colorado's Girls High School Gymnastics Association.  Right now is the gymnastic season, so I will be judging meets two times a week at various high schools on the Front Range.  I am proud to say that I have been at RMAE for 11 years, an Evergreen resident for 23 years, and would not want to be anywhere else.

RMAE HAPPENINGS

Back to School Nights - Next week – 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm - Please note that 3rd grade is scheduled on Tuesday along with 7th and 8th grade and 6th grade is scheduled with K-5 on Wednesday.

 Tuesday, 9/5 – Grades 3, 7 & 8

Wednesday, 9/6 – Grades K, 1, 2, 4, 5 & 6

K-6 In an effort to accommodate parents with more than one child, we have scheduled two half hour homeroom sessions.  After visiting homeroom classrooms, parents will rotate to the specials classrooms.  The specials teachers will be presenting their subject area in 15 minute increments beginning at 6:30 pm.  Please plan to attend as many sessions as you are able.  If after attending a homeroom session parents have specific questions, parents may attend the Q & A scheduled from 7:00 to 7:30 pm.

7-8 Parents may begin by choosing one of the two core subjects listed for their child’s grade in the schedule below.  They will then proceed to the other subject for session 2.  After visiting each of the 4 core classrooms, parents will rotate to the specials classrooms.  If more than one parent of a student is in attendance, we encourage you to split up to allow for visiting with as many specials classrooms as possible.  Core subject teachers will also be available for a Q & A from 7:00 to 7:30 pm.

WEEKLY HEALTH TIP
- By: Mrs. Best/P.E. Teacher.  A health tip will be added to the school’s weekly newsletter. In this section, you will find one health/fitness tip that coincides with what your children are learning in P.E. class. These tips may be something you already do as a family or maybe they are little reminders to guide your family into experiencing an overall sense of wellbeing. May you have a fabulous Labor Day weekend!

Health Tip #1 Drink plenty of clean, pure water. How much? Multiply your weight by .67.

Example: 140lbs x .67= 93.8 ounces of water per day

You should add 12 ounces of water to your daily total for every 30 minutes that you work out. For instance: If you work out 45 minutes per day, you would add 18 ounces of water to your daily intake.

Make sure to send your children to school with a water bottle. Next week I will be teaching this health tip during their fitness assessment in P.E. class.

Volunteers Needed for P.E.  -  Thank you to those parents who have already volunteered for assessments next week.  If you missed the sign-up, there are still slots available.  During the week of September 5-7th, our 2nd -8th grade students will undergo fitness assessments. These assessments will be measurements for their own growth in physical fitness. At the end of the school year we will measure grades 2nd-5th again for a summative assessment.  However, the middle school students will be reassessed every 6 weeks. Their data will be used in various ways in their middle school math class.  I would like 9 volunteers for each of the following time slots:

Tuesday, September 5th

8:15-10:00am (4th/ 5th grade)

10:40-11:30am (3rd grade)

1:15-2:05pm (2nd grade)

Wednesday, September 6th

9:45-11:45am (8th grade)

1:15-3:00pm (4th/5th grade)

Thursday, September 7th

7:45-9:50am (7th grade)

1:00-3:00pm (6th grade)

If you can help, please email me at [email protected] with the day(s) and time(s) you can help.  Thank you!  Lisa Best

Orchestra - I heard a batch of amazingly talented musicians this past Monday, and would like to extend the audition period for both our Sinfonietta and our Chamber Orchestra until mid-October!  Please contact me if you are interested at [email protected].  Thank you!

100 Elk - Middle School Team Building – It was an exciting week for our middle school students (6th-8th) who attended a 3-day field trip this week to 100 Elk located near Buena Vista.  Students are able to partake in horseback riding, ropes courses, hiking, archery, canoeing, evening bonfires and various other team-building exercises.   They will return Friday afternoon tired but with ear to ear grins.

Student Fee Payment AssistanceStudent fees may be reduced or waived by completing a Family Economic Data Survey and qualifying for this program assistance.  This form must be received by September 25th to be considered for a reduction or elimination of student fees this year.  Please download the Family Economic Data Survey and return it to the RMAE Financial Office.

Mountain Backpack Program – If you are in need of a little extra help to meet the nutritional needs of your family this program can help.  There are no qualification requirements and only contact information is requested.  More information and an enrollment form is available - Mountain Backpack Program Enrollment.
