News from the Principal

Hello RMAE Families,

In our Middle School this year we started a Math Counts team as an elective option.  Math counts is a national math competition that involves both individual and team work.  It is a unique experience and the whole process certainly prepares our students for higher level problem solving and competitions in high school. The process begins locally and continues to regionals and nationals. We are fortunate to have a volunteer Math Counts coach who has been meeting with the students weekly.

I am honored to share our very own RMAE middle school students, Trevor Chartier, Hayden Hyslop, Will Kelley and Kelsey Vaughn, participated in the Math Counts Competition last week.  They were the only team competing from Jeffco's Mountain Area schools.  The team competed against 80+ students from ten private and public schools in both individual and team events for the chance to advance to the state level.  Although they missed making the top ten, a special congratulations goes to Trevor for placing 17th overall.  The students shared that the experience was fun and they would highly recommend it to their classmates.

Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Ann Hudson

Elective of the week - In gardening, we are working with our hands every day to grow a variety of plants! Currently, we are growing many spices, lima beans, and (hopefully!) baby carrots. Students learn how to care for plants, transplant them, and start seeds. When we're just waiting for our plants to grow, we watch documentaries about the science behind plants, measure their growth, and have a great time doing it. With a class full of sixth graders (and a few eighth graders), we are building a foundation of students who love and value our earth and all the things it can give us. We look forward to many more quarters of growing, learning, and having fun!

WEEKLY HEALTH TIP - By Mrs. Best/P.E. Teacher - Health Tip #22 - Are All Calories the Same?  During P.E. class this week students were surprised to learn that not all calories are the same. Popular belief says that if you eat less and exercise more, you will lose weight. This is not true anymore because of the increased amount of high sugar and processed foods on the market. For instance, both a 20 oz. cola and a serving size of almonds are 160 calories. However, our body uses the calories of each differently.  When we eat the 160 calories of almonds, our body uses those calories as fuel. When we drink the 160 calories of cola, our blood sugar levels spike too high due to excessive sugar and our body stores the calories as fat. Therefore, our health is not determined by the number of calories we eat. Instead, our health is determined by the quality of calories that we eat.

Classroom News

Kindergarten - 2nd Grade -  Field trip to the Arvada Center - The kids all watched the play, The Seussical and then participated in a variety of activities.

Kindergarten students had an opportunity to act out the play Rainbow Fish.

The 1st graders used corn husks to make toys like the early Pioneers did.  They had a great time and showed off their creativity with their homemade dolls!

Second grade enjoyed putting on their own impromptu play The Three Little Pigs.

7th Grade - In class this week, students completed a budget activity to enhance our Great Depression unit. They each had realistic salaries that changed throughout the 1930s and had to budget based on needs and unexpected emergencies. Students practiced math, felt the impact of the Great Depression, had to be creative, and made adjustments as they lost and gained money.

News from the Board

The next Board meeting is scheduled for March 8th at 7:00 pm in the music room next to the technology room. Everyone is welcome to attend. There will be time for public comment at the beginning and at the end of the meeting, and we would love to hear from you.

Elections for new Board of Directors Parent Representatives:

Three seats for parent representatives will be opening up in June. These are three-year positions. One person with a background in accounting and finance is especially needed to succeed Treasurer, Gil Gomez. Please consider serving with us on the Board of Directors. It is a great way to keep informed and to serve the school community. Please submit letters of interest and a short resume to the BoD at [email protected]

Election Committee Volunteers:  We are also looking for volunteers to run the election. The election committee requires a parent and a teacher to collect the letters of interest, run the 'Meet the Candidates Event' the second week of April, run the election, and present the results. If interested, please contact President, Amy Broxterman at [email protected] ASAP.
