Elective of the week - In gardening, we are working with our hands every day to grow a variety of plants! Currently, we are growing many spices, lima beans, and (hopefully!) baby carrots. Students learn how to care for plants, transplant them, and start seeds. When we're just waiting for our plants to grow, we watch documentaries about the science behind plants, measure their growth, and have a great time doing it. With a class full of sixth graders (and a few eighth graders), we are building a foundation of students who love and value our earth and all the things it can give us. We look forward to many more quarters of growing, learning, and having fun!
WEEKLY HEALTH TIP - By Mrs. Best/P.E. Teacher - Health Tip #22 - Are All Calories the Same? During P.E. class this week students were surprised to learn that not all calories are the same. Popular belief says that if you eat less and exercise more, you will lose weight. This is not true anymore because of the increased amount of high sugar and processed foods on the market. For instance, both a 20 oz. cola and a serving size of almonds are 160 calories. However, our body uses the calories of each differently. When we eat the 160 calories of almonds, our body uses those calories as fuel. When we drink the 160 calories of cola, our blood sugar levels spike too high due to excessive sugar and our body stores the calories as fat. Therefore, our health is not determined by the number of calories we eat. Instead, our health is determined by the quality of calories that we eat.
Classroom News
Kindergarten - 2nd Grade - Field trip to the Arvada Center - The kids all watched the play, The Seussical and then participated in a variety of activities.
Kindergarten students had an opportunity to act out the play Rainbow Fish.
The 1st graders used corn husks to make toys like the early Pioneers did. They had a great time and showed off their creativity with their homemade dolls!
Second grade enjoyed putting on their own impromptu play The Three Little Pigs.
7th Grade - In class this week, students completed a budget activity to enhance our Great Depression unit. They each had realistic salaries that changed throughout the 1930s and had to budget based on needs and unexpected emergencies. Students practiced math, felt the impact of the Great Depression, had to be creative, and made adjustments as they lost and gained money.
