Teacher Spotlight - Hi! My name is Ann Hushen. I am currently sharing the 2nd grade position with Karen Hines. Being able to teach students together has so many benefits for both teachers and students. This is my 16th year to teach at RMAE! What a thrill I have to see mature young people return to visit, who I taught in 2nd grade. I love the sense of community that exists at our school. My husband and I moved to Evergreen 18 years ago. After living in many places as a Navy brat growing up, I fell in love with this area.
I enjoy camping and hiking, and of course, reading. My little dog, Sassy, and I take off each summer and spend a good part of summer camping in our beautiful mountains.
I am fortunate to have 3 lovely granddaughters who live in Evergreen. My other son and his family live in Adelaide, Australia, where I am heading this Christmas holiday. I can hardly wait!
Elective of the week - Stop Motion - Stop motion is a video technique in which a series of single photographs are strung together to make a film that shows inanimate objects in motion. Students in this elective watch stop motion videos for inspiration, including Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. They then create their own stop motion short films using a variety of mediums like drawings, people, and objects.
WEEKLY HEALTH TIP - By Mrs. Best/P.E. Teacher - Health Tip #14 - Get Mentally Fit - Mental Fitness can be defined as having the resources necessary to cope with the average daily stressors. To be mentally fit, one functions well with the daily hassles of life and is able to contribute to community and family in a positive way. A high level of mental fitness reduces stress, strengthens the immune system and increases the overall quality (and perhaps quantity) of life.
How does one strengthen mental fitness? Lifestyle factors can play a role including sleep, healthy nutrition, and daily physical activity. Understanding and collecting a tool box of resources also plays a role in strengthening mental fitness. Personal resources may include friends and family, walks in nature, meditation, and simple acts of deep breathing. Community based resources could include a medical professional, clinical counsellor, or support group.
In P.E. class I have been speaking about the importance of using gratitude during times of feeling negative. It is important to honor and acknowledge within oneself any negative thoughts or feelings that one may be experiencing. Then consciously remember to choose to be grateful for the bigger picture of our life. Being honest with ourselves about how we feel in the details of a moment is important especially when we follow it up with an attitude of gratitude to expand our perception of reality. Through an attitude of gratitude we are able to feel empowered and not controlled by negative people or events that come into our lives! Negative aspects are a part of reality but they are not the whole part of reality in the grand scheme of life. When our focus is narrow and focused on one aspect, which may feel negative, we can zoom our focus out like a camera lens and appreciate the vast landscape from a perspective of reverence, gratitude, and beauty. Being mentally fit is a choice that is equal to all walks of life. May you realize the power you possess for your own mental health by choosing to have an attitude of gratitude.

Classroom News
1st Grade - Congratulations to ALL of the first graders for showing growth on their NWEA MAP tests for math and reading! I am so proud of you! Keep up the great work! Sincerely, Mrs. Scheid
5th Grade - Kudos to the kids! The results are in and the vast majority of the kids improved their scores on our recent NWEA testing. In addition, over half surpassed their year-end goals (one year of growth) in reading and/or math in just over three months of school. But we are certainly not resting on our laurels; we will keep pushing in the New Year and make sure all students are excelling. Thanks for your work and support. All learning starts at home. - Ms. Deeter
