Specials Class Spotlight - by Lisa Best - Our Physical Education program encompasses all areas of wellness and health. Every class focuses on teaching our students how to take responsibility for their own physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Every sport is taught throughout the school year through a non-competitive approach. Therefore, competition is not the focus of our physical education program. Instead our program is focused on learning new locomotor skills, improving existing locomotor skills, eating healthy, having fun, and practicing core virtues.
In the beginning of the year, 2nd-8th grade underwent a fitness assessment. The assessment tested their strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. This initial assessment allows the students to observe their strengths and weaknesses within these three components of fitness. The assessment gives them a clear picture of health goals that they can focus on throughout the school year. The students are then taught about goal setting. Each class is taught proper nutrition and the importance of making healthy choices within their diet, as well as, practical core virtue lessons which guide the students in taking responsibility for the way they treat themselves and others. This wholistic physical health education program provides enough practical feedback to the student, so that they may create four personal health goals throughout the school year. Every two months they are able to reflect upon their goals and observe the health benefits that have resulted from their efforts. At the end of the school year, they will undergo the same assessment to show their growth in their physical fitness.
Our amazing middle-school students are ready to take on more leadership within our school community. During inclement weather days, they have started to embark upon a new leadership curriculum called “Habitudes”. This curriculum focuses on how to build a solid inner foundation of virtue. As they grow in virtue, they grow in a sense of inner worth and value. This foundation is an integral part of becoming a valuable leader in their relationships to the world.
Trunk or Treat is Friday, October 27th at 4:30 pm. Come watch the middle school students perform Michael Jackson’s, “Thriller Flash Mob Dance” on the field at RMAE! It will be SPOOKTACULAR!!!
WEEKLY HEALTH TIP - By Mrs. Best/P.E. Teacher - Health Tip #7 - Life can be busy; using free tools makes healthy eating easy!
Parents play a big part in shaping children's habits on eating and physical activity. When parents eat foods that are lower in fat and added sugars and high in fiber, children learn to like these foods as well. If your child does not like a new food right away, don't be upset. Children often need to see a new food many times before they will try it.
Being healthy sounds like it could be a lot of work, right? Well, it doesn't have to be. A free, online tool called the MyPlate Daily Checklist can help you create a daily food plan. All you have to do is type in whether you are male or female, your weight, height, and how much physical activity you get each day. The checklist will tell you how many daily calories you should take in and what amounts of fruit, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy you should eat to stay within your calorie target.
Another tool, called the SuperTracker, can help you plan, analyze, and track both your eating patterns and physical activity. With SuperTracker, you can find out what and how much to eat, track your foods, physical activities and weight, and set personal goals.
With SuperTracker’s Food-A-Pedia , you can type in a food or beverage to find out how many calories it has, as well as how much sugar, saturated fat, and sodium. The tool has nutrition information for more than 8,000 foods. You can use Food-A-Pedia to plan meals like the ones below. For easy and healthy recipe ideas, visit BAM! Body and Mind .
Here’s an example of healthy school day meals:
Breakfast: a banana, a slice of whole-grain bread with avocado or tomato, and fat-free or low-fat milk
Lunch: a turkey sandwich with dark leafy lettuce, tomato, and red peppers on whole-wheat bread
Dinner: two whole-grain taco shells with chicken or black beans, fat-free or low-fat cheese, and romaine lettuce
Snack: an apple, banana, or air-popped popcorn
