Family Summary of September Board Meeting

The September Board of Directors meeting was jam packed with progress.  Before getting down to business, we were treated to an introduction to this year’s Student Council officer candidates.  The group, along with Mr. Whitson, the new middle school social studies teacher and Student Council advisor has exciting plans for the year such as new events and communications, and a plan to mentor 5th graders who may like to serve in future years.  One officer will attend every Board meeting on a rotating basis.

As required by our bylaws, the Board voted to appoint a community member to join us.  The community member must not be a current parent of an RMAE student.  We are pleased to welcome Ms. Kelli Anderson to this position for a 3 year term.  She is a past RMAE parent and Board member seeking to remain supportive of future success.

PTO President Tiffany Fontaine provided a report on the many great new and returning events planned for this year.  PTO also harvested the volunteerism numbers from the 2018-2019 school year from AtoZ Connect, and presented the results.  49 Families met the recommended 60 hour minimum.  We want to thank all of them, and especially the 14 families who volunteered for over 100 hours!!  Only 134 families participated in logging their hours in AtoZ.

As a charter school, one of our success indicators is 100% involvement in some volunteering from each family.  There are many opportunities to be involved and a great need for help.  Please consult the Grizzly Growl, your Classroom Coordinator emails, teacher emails, or ask a PTO or Board member for ideas on how to stay involved.  In related news, Board members will be reaching out to parents who signed up for committees this month, and hope to see committee reports start coming in at next month’s Board meeting.  There is still time to join a committee.  As a reminder, they are: School Accountability (SAC), Policy & Bylaws, Technology, Finance, Marketing, Facilities, and Capital Development (formerly Fundraising).

The Treasurer’s report revealed higher than expected expenses for this fiscal year due to building repairs, updated curriculum materials, and delayed payments.  The Board will approve a new budget that incorporates these expenses after finalizing our income based on the October 4 student count.  (Reminder…please make sure your students are in class on October 4.  This is not an ideal day for dentist appointments!)

The Principal’s report included an incredible amount of progress on facilities, marketing, and enrollment activities, as well as new plans for teacher professional development and team structures.  Dr. Hudson also updated our comparative demographics and reported our beginning-of-year standardized testing scores.

Please join us for the next Board of Directors meeting October 3 at 7pm.  (The schedule was adjusted due to the long weekend beginning with noon dismissal Oct 10.)  One potential agenda item is a conceptual presentation on meeting one of our Strategic Plan goals for identifying, designing, and constructing a multi-purpose space.

Such improvements will never be possible without participation in our Annual Giving Campaign.  Please look for information on this year’s campaign soon!
